Howard & Company, Boston, three original blued steel hands, No. 3 eight-day duration, jeweled and damascened plate movement, Geneva stop and dead-beat escapement enclosed in brass dust cover, temperature compensating pendulum with two faceted glass jars, powered by a brass-cased weight, ht. 84 1/2 in.Note: An 1874 E. Howard catalogue describes these timekeepers as Astronomical Clocks for Observatories, Regulators for Watchmakers Use and for Railway Depots ; further it states it has four holes and the pallets jewelled, and a mercurial pendulum thoroughly adjusted to heat and cold, which enables us to detect the variation of one-hundredth of a second per day.
